Pumpkin pail with sweets, remember these Halloween candy tips!

Is your family looking forward to Halloween? This spooky season is filled with fun activities, scary movies, and mountains of candy. Unfortunately, all the sweets can easily leave you and your loved ones with a mouth full of cavities before the year is over. Thankfully, a few simple precautions can go a long way to keep your smile safe while indulging in your favorite fall treats! Use these five Halloween candy tips to keep your family’s pearly whites happy and healthy all season long.

1.) Choose Your Candy Carefully

No candy is good for your teeth, but some sweets can cause more damage than others. Candies that are hard, chewy, or sour can quickly weaken your teeth and leave them more susceptible to decay and damage. Instead, choose softer candies, sugarless gum, and dark chocolate

2.) Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is a key part of staying healthy, especially while your family snacks on seasonal treats. Encourage them to drink plenty of water as they enjoy their Halloween candy. This will wash away lingering sugars and sticky residue that would otherwise cause cavities. Staying hydrated also encourages saliva production, which is your body’s natural tooth decay deterrent.

3.) Treat Yourself to Some Chocolate

If you’re a big fan of chocolate, good news! Chocolate is one of the safer candy choices for your teeth. It’s not very hard or sticky, and it’s easy to clean away since it melts quickly. What’s more, dark chocolate contains less sugar than white or milk chocolate as well as a variety of beneficial antioxidants.

4.) Keep Using Fluoridated Dental Products

As Halloween gets closer, make sure your loved ones are in the habit of using fluoridated dental products! Toothpastes and mouthwashes with fluoride fortify your enamel and help your teeth become more resistant to decay. Make sure your dental care products have the ADA Seal of Approval for maximum protection!

5.) Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Family’s Dental Checkups

Halloween marks the start of the busy winter holiday season. With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years all just around the corner once October ends, now is a great time to schedule your family’s routine dental checkups. Seeing your dentist twice a year gives them the best chance of spotting and stopping oral health issues before they have a chance to cause you or your loved ones unnecessary damage or discomfort.

Don’t let cavities haunt you after Halloween! Keep these five simple tips in mind to keep you and your family’s smiles healthy while you indulge in your favorite festive treats!
