Woman experiencing pain due to loose tooth

As a kid, loose teeth are a fun, exciting part of growing. However, once you’re an adult, realizing you have a loose tooth can be surprising and stressful. Whether it’s injury from physical trauma, or oral health issues that have developed over time, experiencing a loose tooth is quite possible as an adult. That’s why it’s important to ensure you know exactly what to do if this problem occurs. Read on to learn your next steps after a loose tooth.

Step #1. Call Your Dentist

As soon as you notice that you have a loose tooth, contact your dentist. Typically, they will be able to see you on the same-day that your problem occurs to restore your health and relieve any potential pain. If you can see your dentist within 12 to 24 hours of the time you noticed your loose tooth, you’ll have a higher chance that it can be saved.

Step #2. Keep Your Tooth in Place (Don’t Play with It)

If you have a loose tooth, it’s best to do all you can to avoid touching it, playing with it, or moving it with your tongue. Do not try to straighten it or do anything to move it back into place as this could cause more damage. Typically, any kind of motion will only make the issue worse. Plus, even if you think your tooth will need to be pulled, you should never do it yourself because it could result in a painful and improper extraction.

Step #3. Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods

Before you get to your dentist’s office, you may be hungry. If so, avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods at all cost. If you must eat with a loose tooth, take small bites of soft food on the opposite side of your mouth to try to prevent further harm to the area.

Step #4. Keep Flossing but Don’t Brush

Oral healthcare is more important than ever with a loose tooth, but you shouldn’t brush your teeth because it could cause unnecessary movement. However, an easy way to clean your mouth is to swish around warm water. Remember to gently spit it out when you’re done to prevent your tooth from moving. You should also floss but skip the affected area.

You can never completely prevent the possibility of a loose tooth, but now that you know what to do if one occurs, you’ll be prepared. Keep these tips in mind and always call your dentist as soon as you notice something is wrong to maintain a healthy and full smile.
