Learn What to Do When You Have an Object Stuck Between Your Teeth

Whether it’s a popcorn kernel, a seed, or a stubborn strand of meat, getting something stuck between your teeth is more than just annoying—it can lead to discomfort, inflammation, and even infection if not handled properly.

Fortunately, there are safe and simple steps you can take at home to dislodge the object and avoid causing damage to your teeth or gums.

Stay Calm and Don’t Use Sharp Objects

It might be tempting to grab a toothpick, safety pin, or another sharp object to dig out the debris, but doing so can actually do more harm than good. You risk injuring your gums, scratching your enamel, or even pushing the object further between your teeth.

Instead, start with gentler, dentist-approved methods to remove the item safely.

    Try Flossing (The Right Way)

Dental floss is your best friend in this situation. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and use a C-shaped motion to lift the debris out. Avoid snapping the floss or using excessive force—it should glide smoothly between the teeth to avoid irritating your gums.

If regular floss isn’t doing the trick, try a floss pick or a water flosser for extra precision and pressure.

    Rinse with Warm Salt Water

If the object is still stuck, rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and loosen whatever is trapped. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and swish it gently around your mouth. This method also helps soothe irritated gums and keep bacteria in check.

Use an Interdental Brush or Soft Pick

Interdental brushes and soft picks are designed specifically to clean between teeth and around dental work. These small, flexible tools can help dislodge trapped debris without damaging your enamel or soft tissues. Be sure to use one that fits comfortably between your teeth, and never force it into a tight space.

Don’t Ignore Lingering Pain or Swelling

If you’ve tried all the at-home methods and the object still won’t come out—or if you’re experiencing ongoing discomfort, swelling, or bleeding—it’s time to call your dentist. Leaving something stuck between your teeth can lead to gum irritation, infection, or even damage to nearby teeth.

Your dental team has the tools and expertise to remove the object safely and assess whether any additional treatment is needed.

    Prevent Future Incidents

To reduce the chances of getting food stuck between your teeth in the future, consider these tips:

    • Avoid biting into foods with husks, shells, or tough fibers (like popcorn, corn on the cob, or ribs)
    • Maintain good oral hygiene to minimize gaps between teeth caused by gum recession
    • Talk to your dentist about using dental sealants or aligners if spacing or crowding is an issue

A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your smile healthy and comfortable.

Taking the right steps early can prevent a minor inconvenience from turning into a dental emergency.
