Pain Relief in Your Cupboard: 5 At-Home Remedies for Toothaches

Person having toothache at home

There is never a convenient time to have a toothache, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With so many people quarantining, a grocery store trip for over-the-counter medicine may be the last thing you want to do. If you have severe, long-lasting dental pain you should schedule an emergency dental appointment immediately. However, here are 5 at-home remedies you can turn to in the short-term to help get you out of pain while you’re waiting for your emergency dental appointment.

1.) Rinse with Salt Water

Salt water can help to ease the pain of a toothache while clearing debris from your mouth. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water and, after it has cooled, swish the mixture around in your mouth for 30-45 seconds. This will help to cleanse your mouth and can potentially relieve swelling.

2.) Use Tea

Both peppermint and black teas have numbing and swelling-reducing properties. After making a cup of tea and allowing the teabag to steep for some time, simply place the teabag against the affected area in your mouth for temporary pain relief.

3.) Make a Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

Swishing with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution can be a good form of temporary pain relief, especially if the pain in your mouth is accompanied by a fever or other signs of infection. It should be noted that this measure is only for swishing and should not be swallowed. Rinse your mouth out with water after using the hydrogen peroxide solution.

4.) Ice the Affected Area

Cold can have numbing properties. Place an ice cube in a plastic bag or wrap it in a washcloth and hold it against the painful area in your mouth. It can also be effective when placed against the outside of your cheek.

5.) Use a Toothpaste Designed for Sensitive Teeth

Some oral pain is caused by the roots of your teeth becoming exposed. Using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth can help to dull the pain that is associated from shrinking gums and exposed tooth roots.

At-home remedies should never be viewed as replacements for being seen by a dental professional. If you are experiencing any sort of prolonged, severe tooth pain, you should schedule an emergency appointment with your dentist immediately. Using these tips and techniques will help you to reduce your pain until your emergency dentist can give you a more permanent solution.
